Gruen begins by examining the ways in which our language and concepts about the body have shaped our thinking about animals. She argues that the Cartesian dualism of mind and body has led us to view animals as mere machines, incapable of feeling pain or suffering. This view has justified our exploitation and abuse of animals, and has made it difficult for us to recognize their moral status.
Gruen then offers a new understanding of the body, one that is based on the insights of phenomenology and feminist theory. She argues that the body is not a passive object, but rather an active and embodied subject. The body is the way that we experience the world, and it is through our bodies that we relate to other beings. This understanding of the body has important implications for our ethical responsibilities to animals.
If the body is a site of agency, vulnerability, and compassion, then we must recognize that animals are also capable of these experiences. Animals can feel pain and suffering, they can form attachments to others, and they can care for their young. This means that we have a moral obligation to treat animals with respect and compassion.
Gruen's book is a challenging and thought-provoking exploration of the ethical implications of our relationships with animals. It is a must-read for anyone interested in animal ethics, the philosophy of body, or environmental ethics.
