Early life
Ted Williams was born in San Diego, California, on August 30, 1918. He was the son of Samuel Stewart Williams, a commercial fisherman, and May Venzor Williams, a homemaker. Williams had two older brothers, Samuel Jr. and Danny. The family lived in a modest home in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. Williams attended Hoover High School, where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He was a star athlete in all three sports, but baseball was his true passion.

Baseball career
Williams began his professional baseball career in 1936, when he signed with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. He played for the Padres for two seasons, then joined the Boston Red Sox in 1939. Williams quickly became one of the best hitters in the American League. He led the league in batting average six times, in home runs four times, and in RBIs twice. He also won the Triple Crown in 1941, becoming the first player to lead the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs in the same season. Williams was also a great fielder, winning the Gold Glove Award for outfielders six times.
Williams' career was interrupted by World War II. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and served as a pilot in the Pacific theater. He flew 39 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After the war, Williams returned to the Red Sox and continued to play at a high level. He helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 1946 and was named the American League MVP in 1949.
Williams retired from baseball in 1960. He finished his career with a .344 batting average, 521 home runs, and 1,839 RBIs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
